Well… “What is the best beard oil formula?” – No one can tell. Everyone has different wishes and needs. This is quite obvious when it comes to fragrance. The market offers an infinite number of different variants for every taste. Tobacco, vanilla, musk, sandalwood, lemon… there is nothing that does not exist. But what the real purpose of a beard oil is, namely the care of your magnificent beard and skin, plays – for me – the much greater role. How useful is the best fragrance, if the care effect is unsatisfactory. You might as well put a perfume in your beard. So what are your needs? Do you have dry skin, is your beard itchy, do you get pimples, wrinkles, blackheads? All not pretty, but no need to panic. With the right beard oil formula, you can target any problem.
What problems do I fight with beard oil?
Actually, I do not only build me an oil to care for my beard. I do not even have a real beard. More like a three day stubble. My goal is an oil, which cares for my skin, my beard does not itch and makes nice and soft. And: I also use the oil to shave. Shave Oil is simply the ultimate advice for sensitive skin like mine. I’m also do not like to have more care products in the closet than my wife, so all-in-one products have always been my thing anyway.
My skin likes to get inflamed after shaving, I’m starting to get wrinkles and even though I’m not a teenager anymore, I still get pimples from time to time. The products from the drugstores and online stores are sometimes really good, but my individual problems require a tailor-made solution for me.
Which natural oil do I include in my beard oil?
Jojoba, jojoba and jojoba again. Why necessarily jojoba, you ask? It’s simple: jojoba has an incredibly wide range of good properties for skin and hair. It’s suitable for virtually any skin type, dry, sensitive or otherwise. It absorbs well into the skin while moisturizing and softening your skin. Jojoba fights acne, wrinkles and inflammation. On top of that, it nourishes your beard hair, which becomes beautifully soft and gets a shine that the ladies will love.
But all these great properties of jojoba oil would only be worth half if it weren’t for my all-important point: jojoba oil is oxidation-stable, which means this oil gives any mixture the necessary shelf life and thus enables sensible and irritation-free formulas.
This is also why I incorporate jojoba into every one of my oils, be it Beard Oil or Shave Oil. It is the perfect base to build upon and add other oils that perform specific tasks.
Add oils from different groups for an all-round solution
You can distinguish between two groups here: Nourishing oils and Active ingredient oils. The nourishing oils are quite stable, similar to jojoba, and also have nourishing, protective and regenerating properties. The active ingredient oils are very unstable, but they have cosmetic intensive regenerating and activating properties.
I am a big fan of sunflower oil. Sunflower oil is very good for your skin and hair. On top of that, it is suitable for all skin types. It helps me against acne and inflammation that I always have especially after shaving.
A classic among the care oils may not be missing in my beard oil: The castor oil. Long time an insider tip – Today arrived in the mainstream. Why this is so, is obvious. It is absorbed really nice and deep into the skin and cares. Also is anti-inflammatory, helps against pimples and fights wrinkles. But it does not clog the pores. An aspect that should not be underestimated.
As the fourth ingredient in my formula, I use grape seed oil. Like so many others, grape seed oil contains nutrients your skin craves. It is, as they say, a light oil that softens my skin without clogging pores. For blemished skin like mine, grape seed oil regulates the sebaceous glands. In natural medicine, people also use the oil to inhibit inflammation.
Rose Hip the Grooming Super Hero
The next ingredient in my personal formula is Rose Hip Oil. It belongs to the variety of active ingredient oils and is used very sparingly. But that is also quite sufficient, because it is a true care super hero. The oil soothes itching, revitalizes and tones the skin, and also helps heal scars. Beyond that, it enjoys a reputation as an anti-aging remedy, though of course it’s no miracle worker.
Last Natural Oil on my list is Borage Oil. It is extracted from the seeds of the wonderful plant Borago officinalis. Moisturizer number 1 I would almost say. That’s definitely one reason why it’s becoming more popular in grooming products, especially anti-aging products. Your skin becomes smooth and supple. Especially for sensitive skin like mine, it is absolutely recommended.
The scent of a beard oil is not just a matter of taste
My groundwork stands, the natural oils are combined from a wide range of different properties to meet all my requirements. But what works externally, namely the scent, will now be the topic. The answer to the question – what is the best beard oil formula – reaches the final stage.
Here, again, we can basically distinguish between two groups: Essential oils and perfume oils. Essential oils are pure natural products. They are obtained by distillation from plants and other substances. Perfume oils, on the other hand, are synthetically produced fragrances. Therefore, a much wider range of fragrances is available. Contrary to many claims, synthetic fragrances are not better or worse than natural essential oils. The latter cause irritation or allergies just as often as their man-made counterparts. If you’re unsure or very sensitive, it’s best to avoid fragrances completely. However, due to the very low concentration, this is not an issue in most cases, like mine. For 30 ml, you take about 1ml of essential oils, which is about 20 drops.
I opted for a woody but also warm scent composition. A mixture of orange, lavender and rosewood. Basically, one distinguishes in fragrances after head, heart and base note. Best harmonize – according to popular opinion at least – combinations of all 3 areas.
With this my All Round Oil is ready. Just try to make an oil yourself, it’s really not rocket science. Answer the question “What is the best beard oil formula?” for yourself.
